WEEK-END DESTINATION SOUTINE IN LONDON PAR MARGARET KEMP

Taking inspiration from Parisian brasseries, bistrots and cafés, Corbin & King recently launched SOUTINE, St John’s Wood High Street.
 
The space is located in a handsome Edwardian building, with a pavement terrace, and takes its’ name from Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943) the French-Russian expressionist painter who was fascinated by cooks and waiting staff of French hotels and restaurants.
 
Picture perfect décor’s by Jeremy King and Shayne Brady of BradyWilliams, influenced by the area’s artistic heritage, showcasing the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Sit at the marble and pewter bar - perfect for a Club Pan Bagnat (£10.75) with Champagne (£10.50) House (11.25) or Classic (£10.75) Cocktails by the mixologist. From the excellent wine list, by the glass from £4.95 or, say, Chablis from Domaine Jean-Paul and Benoit Droin 1er cru Vaillons 2017 (£71).
Chef Maciej Banas suggests starters of beetroot terrine with horseradish cream; cured herrings; sweet mustard and cucumber or endive, dandelion, mache and goat’s curd cheese salad (about £9), croque monsieur/madame (£9.75) Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (£11.25)
 
Mains include perfectly seared sea bass, broccoli (£19.95) confit de canard with braised Puy lentils (£14.75) coq au Riesling (£15.25 for one or £29 for two). Steak, frites, salad (£19.75).
 
Choose cheese or classic French desserts such as coupe Lucian (hazelnut, almond/pistachio ice cream, whipped cream and butterscotch sauce), gâteau Napoleon, deux chocolats mousse, tarte fine aux pommes or Black Forest gâteau (all from around £6).  
 
Corbin & King is run by charismatic restaurateurs Chris Corbin and Jeremy King,  business partners for nearly 40 years. Together, they’ve created some of the most iconic and exciting eating experiences in London. Today, the group comprises The Wolseley and The Wolseley Shop, The Delaunay, Zédel, Colbert, Fischer’s, Bellanger and Café Wolseley.
